Dolly, a mixed pit bull terrier found starved and severely neglected in Lexington last week, died on Friday, MSPCA-Angell said.
The 2-year-old stray suffered a medical emergency overnight Thursday that left her oxygen dependent, the agency said in a statement.
“Given this setback and other concerns about her long-term outlook, medical staff had to make the extremely difficult decision to humanely euthanize her,” the statement said.
Dolly was treated at Angell Animal Medical Center in Jamaica Plain, where she was brought on Jan. 10 by a person who said they found her in Lexington.
She passed away “surrounded by people who cared deeply for her and showered her with love, ice cream, and peanut butter,” the MSPCA-Angell statement said.
Dolly’s tragic young life — she was found emaciated and unable to stand — was the subject of a Globe story .

After arriving at the hospital on Saturday, doctors treated her for emaciation, seizures, wounds on her legs and tail, and internal bleeding, the agency said previously.
MSCPA-Angell investigators continue to look for the owner of the dog, who was named Dolly by Angell medical staff who provided round-the-clock care to her.
“Our Law Enforcement team is still investigating how this incredibly sweet dog ended up in such a state,” Friday’s statement said.
Despite her short hospital stay, “Dolly made a huge impact on our staff,” MSCPA-Angell said. We made a little memorial with her paw print in our Boston office.
