BIG SUR – Post Ranch Inn, the Big Sur resort situated high atop the cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean, has been nominated for Michelin Guide’s inaugural Inspectors’ Local Gateway Award – one of only five properties in the world to be put forward for the recognition and the only nominee in the United States.
The Local Gateway Award is part of a new series of Michelin hotel honors launched in 2025, following the Architecture and Design, and Wellness awards earlier this year.
The award recognizes hotels that embody a profound sense of place, blending seamlessly into their landscapes and cultures and offering travelers experiences that could exist nowhere else, and celebrates a facet of hospitality as essential as service or design.
Each of the five nominees were selected by Michelin’s anonymous inspectors for distinctive features that transform and elevate their settings, from architecture that harmonizes with the land to curated excursions that take guests beyond the retreat itself.
These are among the most unique hotels in the world, set in some of its most extraordinary places, across desert, forest and coast, according to Michelin.

California’s Big Sur is among the most romanticized natural regions in the country — and it is also one of the most protected, a place with few hotels and even fewer of such world-renowned quality, says Michelin. The existence of the Post Ranch Inn is a testament to the eco-friendly design that convinced the community of its good intentions, a perfect harmony of architecture and nature that captures the special feeling that’s brought seekers to Big Sur for generations.
According to Michelin, to find such luxury in Big Sur, more often known for campsites or rustic inns, would be enough for most, but what makes Post Ranch Inn so special is the way its design embraces the landscape through the type of creative thinking Big Sur has long inspired in its visiting artists. Some accommodations are built directly into the craggy cliffs above the Pacific Ocean, their living roofs a seamless blend of native grasses and wildflowers.

The other four nominees for the Michelin Guide’s inaugural Inspectors’ Local Gateway Award are Longitude 131 in Yulara, Australia, with defining features that include a luxurious basecamp that adds its own twists to the natural and cultural experiences of Australia’s Red Centre; Tierra Patagonia in Torres del Paine National Park, Chile, with its integrative design and custom experiences that open Patagonia’s famous natural beauty to every kind of traveler; Zannier Sonop in Namib Desert, Namibia, that provides guests with total immersion in the world’s oldest desert from vintage-style luxury tents; and La Fiermontina Ocean in Larache, Morocco that brings meaningful cultural interaction in a spectacular seaside setting on Morocco’s northwest Atlantic coast.
The winner from these five hotels nominated for the Inspectors’ inaugural Local Gateway Award will be announced Wednesday along with the new global Key distinctions.
